Midwestern Hospitality

A lot of great things have been said about “Southern hospitality,” and to that I say “no.” Southern hospitality is not as hospitable as some might think.

The thing with Southern hospitality is there is almost always the patima of superiority about it. It is a subtle one upmanship where people try to outdo each other in small ways. There are subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) shades of condescension; as if a “bless your heart” is never far away.

This Smells Terrible! Here, Smell It!

Bad writing.

I mean really bad writing.

I love it.

I find it inspirational. Whenever I read a terrible published work, I step back with a little reverence and more awe than I anticipated.

Discovering really terrible writing is like discovering a smell so bad that you have to share it with family and friends. It’s so bad that it becomes a bonding experience.

Censorship is Hilarious!

Censorship is useless. And funny!

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, a near-word, replacement word, or initial doesn’t really mask the actual word. It just pushes the word into the mind of the reader while giving the author semi-plausible deniability.

Math Problems For English Majors

It’s not always “write, write, write”. I have to stimulate the mind in other ways as well.

One is editing. I love editing. I’m just now getting back into editing other people’s prose, which is a joy for me. It’s like a logic puzzle in English; which is just as well since I am terrible at math.

This is a problem I understand is common with a lot of “creative types” (or lazy types like me.) And that is a shame. I have a huge amount of respect for mathematicians. Especially considering I have a better chance of becoming a unicorn than I do a mathematician it makes the profession all that more mystical to me.
